How a Credit Report is Like a Car

Nobody believes that their car, truck or SUV is going to continue to run smoothly without some care and attention.  You fill it with gas, get periodic oil changes, rotate the tires, check the fluid levels, and perform other routine maintenance and repair tasks. Your credit is no different.

Credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union likewise need on-going care and attention. Just paying your bills is not enough.

There are a number of usual actions you should take to keep your credit rating running smoothly, and the other thing you should do is review your credit report periodically.  That allows you to see where your rating stands and what needs to be done to improve it and maintain it.

Do you suppose that negative items are never entered into someone’s report by mistake?  Think again!  Creditors and collection companies make mistakes and incorrect items can have a huge negative impact on your credit rating and FICO Score.

Having these errors removed can improve your score, but that’s just the beginning.  Other actions taken regularly to bring your debt load down and your credit score up to where it needs to be for you to achieve your personal financial goals.

First things first – before any Credit & Debt Management or enhancement action can be taken, you have to know what needs to be dealt with, and the very first step is to get a copy of your three-bureau credit report, so you will know what your creditors know about you.

No one ever gets to a point where some effort is not required to keep and maintain their credit rating and FICO scores.  This applies particularly to successful people.  Someone who has never used a credit card, held a job, managed people or run a business, borrowed money from a bank or taken out a mortgage doesn’t have credit problems.
